The Shiba

The Shiba Inu or Shiba Ken is a small to medium-sized dog breed with origins in Japan, where it was originally used for hunting small game. It is a dog of the spitz type and has a fox-like appearance. It sports a curled tail, erect ears, and a compact, muscular body. They are known for their spirited personality and strong-willed nature, often described as bold, confident, and independent. Despite their small size, they can be quite fearless and alert, making them excellent watchdogs that are fiercely loyal to their people. Their coat is double-layered, with a soft undercoat and a stiff outer coat, which sheds out twice a year. The recognized coat colors are red, sesame, and black and tan. They are fastidiously clean dogs, often grooming themselves like cats and rarely having a "doggy" odor. Shibas can be aloof with strangers but should never be skittish or aggressive. Early socialization and training are important, as they can be stubborn and occasionally reactive toward other dogs. They require regular exercise to stay mentally and physically stimulated. Overall, the Shiba Inu is a charming yet challenging breed that thrives with experienced, patient owners.

Why do I breed Shiba?

My name is Irina, a long-term dog lover and enthusiast. Located in Villach, the south of beautiful Austria. I started working with dogs over 20 years ago. After the passing of my first dog, a rescue mutt, in 2019, I was looking into a potential new companion and came upon the Shiba, as the breed's temperament and constitution intrigued me. My first Shiba, a male named Akiro, came to me in late 2019, and I was hooked. Because reading or hearing about them is different from living with them. And since I got hooked on them myself, I wanted to spend my time preserving their unique nature, health, and temperament for the future and sharing it with fellow Shiba enthusiasts. This meant starting my own kennel, ‘Akai Shishi’ or the red beasts, in 2024, which is registered with the ÖKV and NIPPO. My goal is to raise stable, healthy, and sound dogs that can shine in the show ring as well as in any other sport or situation you put them in. This means I am exceptionally picky when it comes to dogs that enter my breeding program. Only dogs that meet my expectations in health, temperament, and workability are suitable to be carrying on this name.

Shows and Tournaments

I regularly compete in shows and tournaments with my dogs. Results of those will usually be submitted via my social media with a few days’ delay. And later on via my dog’s pedigree entries.

My Dogs

Males

I currently have no breeding males at my kennel, but this could change at some point.

Females

Yume

Yume, (Multi Ch. JICB Yurihime Go Hidden Cascade *07.03.2022) My first ever import bitch, born in South Korea, granddaughter of the great Junken No Fukuryuu go Kyushuu Junkenkai. An exceptionally nice and sturdy red female with outstanding health and temperament. If Bombproof were a dog, she would be it. She shows great food drive and proved herself multiple times in the show ring as well as in other sports. She’s the dam of my first two litters and usually gives her excellent temperament and conformation to her puppies.

Beni

Beni, (Ch, JICB Benzaiten Go Kadzekaoru* 07.01.2024) My sweet, sensitive Russian princess. A very nice, exceptionally well-balanced young female, who brings a lovely sweet temperament and great food/ toy drive with her. She shows herself well in the show ring and loves obedience trials. Which means we will hopefully continue to have lots of fun in the ring and outside.

Fuji

Fuji, (JICB Aragami No Fukuhime Go Akai Shishi* 06.05.2024) A daughter out of Yume's first litter and an absolute ball of energy and love. She’s a very energetic and affectionate young female who loves absolutely every person she meets. She has a great work ethic and temperament, with a few very funny quirks that make her extra lovable. With a few more years of physical development, she’ll probably be able to step into her mother’s paw prints.

My Puppies

All the puppies born in my small kennel are raised indoors with lots of human contact and as much exposure as possible. I try to do the best I can by them and prepare them for their future life as stable companions. When they leave here, which is usually earliest at 12 weeks old, they will be familiar with what I call the Puppy ABC. They will know how to walk on a leash with a collar or harness, and they will be used to the crate and car. We will have done weekly maintenance like grooming and nail clips, and we will work on potty training. Furthermore, they will be able to explore our puppy palace, indoor and outdoor, as well as learn from our experienced older dogs how to live in a pack.

Puppy owners

There are a few things future puppy owners should know about me and my babies. If you are interested in one of my puppies, I’d like to know you and your family before matching you with a puppy that suits your goals. So meeting up with me and your new family member is a crucial step. Or at least video calling us. I love all my puppies, and whatever it is they need, I will be there for them. No matter where they are moving to. Which means I can help with any issues concerning training or daily life. Although I expect the new parents to put good work in to keep my babies happy and well-rounded. I am a very small one-person kennel; this means I only have one litter per year and do not run a waiting list. If you, however, are interested in a future pairing, you can always contact me.
